Speaker
Padmini Srinivasan, Ph.D., Professor, Department of Computer Science at the University of Iowa
Abstract
In this talk, I offer an overview of my career with an emphasis on my research which is roughly at the intersection of computational linguistics and text analytics. Many individuals—whether they realize it or not—have profoundly influenced my path. Looking back, I also recognize the roles of serendipity and good fortune. As with most careers, the retrospective view often appears more insightful than the prospective one. Opportunities have come my way—some taken, others not—bringing to mind Robert Frost’s poem “The Road Not Taken.” My aim is to highlight some key points along the path I did choose and to share how I made certain decisions, to the extent that I understand them myself. Ultimately, I hope these reflections provide the audience with a few useful insights for shaping their own careers.
