ACM@UIowa welcomes students, faculty, and all members of the community to our annual UIowa Computing Conference! The theme for UICC 2025 is "Finance and Technology." On February 22nd, join us at the AJB and the Main Library SHAM auditorium for a deep exploration of how computer science and software engineering intersect with finance. Our esteemed speakers—Professor John Lewis from the UIowa Tippie College of Business, Devansh Dhutia from Capital One, Shea Daniels from Dwolla, and Charles Elkan from the University of California, San Diego—will share their unique research and industry perspectives. John Lewis

John Lewis

Lecturer of Finance, University of Iowa

John Lewis began his career at Data Resources Inc performing data analysis and econometrics. He moved to the OECD in Paris where he created macro databases of emerging markets and assisted these countries attract foreign direct investment. From there John joined Panagora Asset Management as a quantitative portfolio manager of international equity funds in London and Boston. He later worked at Natwest Investment Management and Putnam Investments as a quant. At this point, John created startups in OTC derivatives at Scrittura, and several other quantitative finance startups. During a period of gardening leave after selling Scrittura, John began teaching quantitative finance at Imperial College London. He then moved to Paris and taught finance classes at HEC Paris. After two years at HEC, he became the head of the portfolio management masters at IAE Gustave Eiffel, University of East Paris where it became a top ranked program in France. While in Paris, John created the first startup accelerator and Fablab in France and assisted the French government create an environment for startups and regional development. He returned to America and was the head of the finance degree at the Citadel Military College of the South. He is currently a lecturer at the University of Iowa where he is the faculty advisor for FMA and the Quantitative Finance Club. He received a BA in computer science and artificial intelligence from the University of Georgia, a Master of Science in financial economics from Boston University and a PhD in finance from the Universite Paris Dauphine – PSL.

Shea Daniels

Shea Daniels

Engineering Manager, Dwolla

Shea Daniels is an experienced engineering leader in the FinTech Industry. She's spent the last decade helping to build Dwolla, an Iowa-based payments platform that helps businesses move billions of dollars annually. Dwolla is built to scale in the cloud using technology such as microservices, containerization, queuing, continuous delivery, test-driven development, and functional programming techniques. As an Engineering Manager, Shea embraces an agile mindset and an environment of psychological safety to lead her teams in delivering high-quality software, whether that's in delivering a banking integration or a great customer-facing UI. Shea holds a bachelor's degree in Computer Science from Iowa State University. In 2024, Shea won DSM Magazine's Emerging LGBTQ Legacy Leader award. In her free time she's a public speaker, amateur photographer, rum aficionado, hi-fi enthusiast, and lover of learning anything interesting.

Devansh Dhutia

Devansh Dhutia

Director of Software Engineering, Capital One
Devansh Dhutia is a seasoned technology leader with over 19 years of experience in building and managing cutting-edge data solutions. Currently the Director of Software Engineering at Capital One, Devansh specializes in solving complex data challenges to deliver scalable, real-time systems. These systems power high-impact use cases such as credit card authorizations, fraud detection, and customer servicing workflows, and his innovative solutions have generated over $700 million in business value while maintaining stringent regulatory compliance and industry-leading data governance.
 
Devansh’s expertise spans cloud-native architecture, advanced analytics, and real-time streaming platforms that enhance customer experiences across mobile, web, and phone channels. He is also a passionate mentor and has guided numerous engineering professionals in their technical and leadership development.
 
Previously, Devansh held key engineering roles at the USA TODAY Network, where he drove major cloud migrations, operational efficiencies, and high-availability systems. He holds an M.S. in Computer Science from the University of Iowa and has been a speaker at prominent industry events, sharing insights on topics such as cloud operations and content delivery.
Charles Elkan

Charles Elkan

Professor of Computer Science, University of California, San Diego

Charles Elkan is currently an affiliate professor of computer science at the University of California, San Diego, where for many years previously he was a tenured full professor. In recent years he has worked in New York as the co-founder of Ficc.ai (https://www.ficc.ai), as a venture partner at Fellows Fund (https://www.fellowsfundvc.com), and as a consultant. Until 2020 he was a managing director and the global head of machine learning at Goldman Sachs, while from 2014 to 2018 he was the first Amazon Fellow, leading scientists and engineers in Seattle, Palo Alto, and New York doing research and development in machine learning for both e-commerce and cloud computing. He earned his Ph.D. at Cornell University and his undergraduate degree in mathematics at Cambridge University. His students have gone on to professorships at universities that include Columbia and Carnegie Mellon, and to central roles in industry, including as team lead for multiple generations of ChatGPT and for AI in Google search .
